Nairobi should brace itself for a movie viewing experience ‘like no other’ from this November, with the opening of the city’s second IMAX outlet.
One of Africa’s biggest movie theatre chains, Century Cinemax, is about to launch what it terms as a one-of-a-kind IMAX theatre screen in Nairobi, located at the Garden City Mall along the Thika Road Superhighway. Speaking at a Press tour of the soon to be complete theatre, Garth Youne, Century Cinemax Manager said a total of five screens will be opened on November 18th 2016 to make it the chain with the most screens in the region.
Century Cinemax currently has 7 screens in Tanzania, 2 in Uganda and with the addition of the Garden City outlet, this will make a total of 14 in the region.
Of interest though will be the massive IMAX screen, which is the only of its kind in East Africa and the second in Africa. Mr. Youne disclosed that the IMAX headquarters reached out to them and sent technicians with the latest version to install at the new theater at Garden City, beating every other cinema in the region and making them the first.
All the five screens, IMAX, Atmos, VIP, 2D and 3D, have a combined capacity of over 680 people with the IMAX theater alone seating over 200. Another special feature of this outlet will be the VIP theater screen which will be more spacious, have personalized services and even reclining seats. It’s a concept that has been most prevalent in South Africa but now calls home.
All the other screens utilize laser technology and will deliver crisp images, with even higher sound quality, giving theater goers an experience worth their money.
Mr. Youne said the $ 3 million invested in the Garden City Mall theater is long term and will go a long way as Century Cinemax seeks to consolidate their strength in the Kenya and the region as a whole, promising Kenyans a state of the art movie theater that will beat everyone’s expectations.
On its part, Garden City Mall’s management has welcomed Century Cinemax into the growing tenant family, saying that setting up the theater at one of the newest and biggest malls in the country, fits into its vision as the premier venue in Nairobi.
Special viewing events have been arranged starting from November 18th as the theater launches with the newest J K Rowling release ‘Fantastic Beasts (and Where to Find them).
