Prolific Kenyan afro-jazz artiste Achieng Abura died Thursday night, 20th October 2016 at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
According to The Standard Kenya, the mother of one had been rushed to the ICU after an undisclosed condition she had worsened. Achieng last posted on her Facebook page on October 7th about a weight issue she had.
‘I have lost over 50 kgs in the last three years,’ she wrote. ‘Everything is hanging and weak. Walking is a problem with pains all over.’
Achieng went on to say that doctors had advised she add some significant weight and then attempt to lose it through exercise. The tail-end of the post was a heartfelt culmination.
Achieng Abura has for long been one of the cornerstones of music, especially afro-jazz, in Kenya. Celebrities and media personalities as well as political leaders and business people poured in their messages of condolence across social media.
‘A good soul has ascended to heaven,’ said Nairobi Governor, Evans Kidero.
‘Fare thee well my dear comrade, you have fought the fight, you have finished the race. Till we meet again!’ posted Suzanna Owiyo.
‘Kenya is the poorer without you,’ posted MP Sakaja Johnson.
As the sun set on Mashujaa (Heroes) Day, so did it set on the life of one of Kenya’s musical heroes. Rest in Peace.
