Kenyan music group Sauti Sol was crowned Africa’s Best Group at the 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards which were held in South Africa over the weekend.
The group was the only East African outfit to win an award at the ceremony which took place at the TicketPro Dome in Johannesburg.
Sauti Sol was also nominated in the categories of Song of the Year, Best Collab and Artist of the Year. It was the first time for Sauti Sol to clinch the coveted and highly competitive award for Best Group.
“Winning the Best Group award is a career highlight for us, and the East African music industry as a whole. We’ve been working hard and consistently at our career for about seven years straight,” said Sauti Sol in Jo’burg, straight after the win.
“The past year was a big one for us with the release of our self-produced third album: Live and Die in Afrika. We also staged our first nationwide tour that is now onto a global scale. We thank our fans, friends and family for believing in us and loving our music. We also love to thank the media across Africa for showing us their support during our road to MAMAs 2016.”
The group thanked the other nominees in their category and urged artistes to join hands in making Africa’s music industry better and bigger.
On the seemingly endless MAMA red carpet, Sauti Sol were dressed in velvet tuxedos by Dambala Sabaquo and styled by Brian Babu.
Sauti Sol are not resting on their laurels though; following the MAMAs win, the award winning group is set for a North American tour that will see them perform in Dallas, Washington, Minnesota, New York, Seattle and North Carolina from October 30th through to mid-November.
