American pop-sensation Jason Derulo, riding high on his hit single ‘Swalla’ featuring Nicki Minaj, has been unveiled as this season’s guest star performer on the biggest music show on the continent, Coke Studio Africa.
It really is amazing how fast time flies, because it seems like just the other day that we were revelling in the re-arrangement of Nyashinski‘s ‘Mungu Pekee‘ by Nigerian star Yemi Alade. This year Coke Studio has merged Coke Studio Africa and Coke Studio South Africa into what showrunners claim is the biggest and best yet, Coke Studio Africa – 2017. Derulo, who is set to jet into Nairobi sometime this week, will feature on a special episode themed the Global Fusion Edition!
Coke Studio Africa has already brought megastars such as Wyclef Jean, Ne-Yo (who went on to release a successful single with Tanzania‘s Diamond Platnumz the following year, and Trey Songz, so this really was a continuation of the trend, and one certain to keep Nairobi on the global musical map.
Producing the African artiste’s track featuring Jason Derulo has been tasked to two of Africa’s hottest music producers: Masterkraft (Nigeria) and DJ Maphorisa (South Africa), after which all the music will be performed and recorded live alongside Coke Studio’s house band. Last year, DJ Maphorisa produced the music collaborations between Trey Songz and selected Coke Studio African stars.
In addition to homegrown talent in Kenya, this season of Coke Studio Africa will include artistes from South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana, Angola, Zimbabwe, Togo, Cote d’Ivoire, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, DRC and Cameroon. The season premieres across different regions from September and will broadcast in more than 30 countries across the continent.
