This year’s Kenya Film Commission‘s Kalasha International Film & TV Awards nominees have been unveiled today following an unveiling event which was held at the ANGA IMAX Cinema along Nairobi‘s Mama Ngina Street.

Mbithi Masya‘s ‘Kati Kati’ is the frontrunner of the awards, managing a spectacular 13 nominations, ahead of Nick Njache‘s ‘Kidnapped’ with 8 nominations and 7 for Arnold Mwanjila‘s ‘Aisha’.

Up for the Best Feature Awards are ‘Kati Kati’, ‘Aisha’, Grace Kahaki‘s ‘Inherited’ and ‘Kidnapped’. Each of the Directors of these films is also up for nomination in the Best Director category of the Kalasha Awards.

Elsaphan Njora and Maina Olwenya lead the list of Best Actors this year, alongside Ayub Bakari and Frank Kimani. In the Best Actress category, ‘Kati Kati’ breakaway star Nyokabi Gethaiga is up against competition from Joyce Maina (Aisha), Anita Nthenya Kavuu Ng’ang’a (Chebet) and Melissa Kiplagat (Kaleidoscope).

Going by the trend of Best TV commercials nominees of this year’s edition, which features Faiba, Mkulima, Betin and Wafula, Safaricom‘s groundbreaking Funtastic 4Gs may be a shoe-in next year’s categories.

This year, the Kenya Film Commission acknowledged that it registered the highest number of entries ever received since the inception of Kalasha, with 237 films successfully submitted. This year, Kalasha International has been split into three segments; with the Kalasha International Film Festival set for 4th – 8th December 2017, the Awards gala slated for 9th December 2017 and the International Market set for March 2018.
