The Sarova Mara Game Camp, Sovereign Suites – Nairobi by Sun Africa and Kinondo Kwetu flew the Kenyan flag high over the continent at the just concluded 2017 World Luxuy Hotel Awards which were held at a gala event at the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz in Switzerland. The establishments were recognized as exceptional in the categories of Luxury Adventure Destination, Luxury All Suite Hotel and Luxury Beach Lodge respectively.
The Sarova Mara Game Camp, placed within the Maasai Mara National Reserve and near the Sekenani gate, took home the biggest award of the night for the Sarova Hotels group, emerging the global winner in the Luxury Tented Safari Camp category. Sarova Hotels, Resorts and Game Lodges, the largest indigenous chain of hotels in country was awarded the Luxury Collection Group Award and Luxury Brand Award in the country and across the continent respectively.
Other local hotels to scoop continental awards were Lantana Galu Beach (Luxury Beach Retreat) in Diani, Elewana AfroChic (Luxury Beach Villa and Luxury Honeymoon Hotel – Kenya) in Kwale, Sun Africa Hotels (Luxury Management Group), Mara Bushtops Camp (Luxury Tented Safari Camp) in Bamburi and the Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge (Luxury Wilderness Lodge) in Nakuru.
DusitD2 Nairobi in the capital’s Riverside suburbs bagged the Luxury Business Hotel Award as Sankara Hotel in Westlands was the country’s Best Luxury Hotel; Kiboko Luxury Camp, Naivasha-Sun Africa Hotels in Naivasha taking the Luxury Safari Retreat Award. Mombasa’s Kinondo Kwetu was crowned Best Luxury Holistic Retreat and Luxury Wedding Destination.
Nairobi’s Sarova Stanley was voted as the best Luxury Heritage Hotel on the continent, as well as the Luxury City Hotel in Nairobi region. The hotel, which was constructed in 1903, has continued to amaze guests due to its rich historical base conveyed through a heritage tour within the hotel.
Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort and Spa emerged top in Kenya’s Luxury Spa Resort and Luxury Beach Resort category. It was also awarded as the top Luxury Family Resort in Mombasa. Into the heart of the country, the Amboseli Sopa Lodge was recognised at the best Luxury Mountain Lodge in the region.

Neighbouring countries were not left far behind, as Essque Zalu Zanzibar in Tanzania was recognised as the Luxury Honeymoon Hotel and Humura Resorts in Kampala took home the Luxury Boutique Retreat Award. The Corinthia Hotel Khartoum in Sudan’s capital also bagged two awards in the categories Luxury Architecture Design Hotel and Luxury Hotel & Conference Centre.
